$4.8 million addition to create 25 new jobs
Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Hollingsworth & Vose Company will invest $4.8 million to expand its Floyd County plant. Governor Gilmore approved a $50,000 grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund to assist the county with the expansion, which will create 25 new jobs over the next three years.
Governor Announces contract with Chaparral Virginia Steel Recycling
Richmond - Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Olympic Mill Services has signed a long-term contract with Chaparral Virginia Steel Recycling. Olympic Mill Services, a division of Tube City, Inc., will provide a variety of services to Chaparral's new $400 million structural steel mill in Dinwiddie County. This new contract will create 50 new jobs.
Expansion to add 100 new jobs over the next three years
Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that CropTech Corporation, a biopharmaceutical research company, will expand its Blacksburg facility. The company, which currently employs 22 people, will employ eight more this year and expects to create 100 jobs over the next three years. This 10,000-square-foot addition will result in a $1.1 million investment for Virginia.
$9 million facility to employ 200 in 1999
Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Chubb Computer Services will open a new 40,000-square-foot facility in Fairfax County. The $9 million computer training and staffing office, which is expected to open in the spring of 1999, will employ approximately 200 people in its first year of business. The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, another Chubb corporation, opened a new Claims Service Center in Chesapeake last month, employing 250 people.
Synthons and Eastern Isotopes reinvest in Virginia
Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that two Virginia pharmaceutical companies will expand their operations. Synthons, Inc. will locate a new 16,000-square-foot laboratory and manufacturing facility in Pulaski County with an investment of $1.8 million and 20 employees. The company expects employment to reach 100 by the year 2000. Eastern Isotopes, Inc. will expand its nuclear pharmacy service network in Loudoun County, with a $2 million investment and an initial employment of 16.
$10 million investment brings 65 jobs to Brunswick County
$8 million investment brings 100 new jobs
Martinsville - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. will expand its Henry County operations. The new 70,000-square-foot facility will bring an $8 million investment to Virginia and create 100 new jobs. A $200,000 Governor's Opportunity Fund was granted to the county to assist with site preparation. Virginia successfully competed with Georgia and North Carolina for the project.

Job totals through July 31 exceed all of 1997
Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Virginia has secured 28,298 new jobs since January as a result of major economic development announcements. More jobs were created in the first seven months of 1998 than for all of 1997.
