RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. will invest $8.9 million to expand in Middletown in Frederick County, creating 50 jobs. The company will add a new medical liquid formula line to its existing operations at its Middletown facility, which produces clinical diagnostics products.
“For over 30 years, Thermo Fisher has thrived as a major employer in Frederick County,” Governor Kaine said. “By investing and expanding in the Commonwealth, Thermo Fisher will create more jobs for working Virginias and reaffirms Virginia’s status as the ‘The Best State for Business.’”
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a leading science supply company, has approximately 34,000 employees and serves more than 350,000 customers within pharmaceutical and biotech companies, hospitals and clinical diagnostic labs, universities, research institutions and government agencies, as well as environmental and industrial process control settings. Serving customers through two premier brands, Thermo Scientific and Fisher Scientific, the company helps solve analytical challenges from routine testing to complex research and discovery.
“The Thermo Fisher Middletown facility is one of two Centers of Excellence for our Clinical Diagnostics operations in the U.S.,” said Dr. Yuh-geng Tsay, who heads the company’s Specialty Diagnostics business. “Increased customer demand for the types of products manufactured in Middletown made it a natural choice for expansion, and we’re pleased that agencies and government officials at both the state and local levels worked with us to make this possible.”
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the Winchester-Frederick County Economic Development Commission to secure the project for Virginia. Governor Kaine approved a $90,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Frederick County with the project. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
“This project further reinforces the fact that Frederick County is a competitive business location for those operating in the biotechnology industry,” said Richard Shickle, Chairman of the Frederick County Board of Supervisors. “We are extremely honored that Thermo Fisher Scientific wishes to extend their long term partnership with Frederick County that started in 1978.”
