RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that NYK Logistics Inc., a leading logistics solutions provider, will open a new 120,000-square-foot distribution facility in the City of Chesapeake, creating 100 new jobs. NYK Logistics’ Hampton facility will continue to operate, and a number of employees will transfer to the new plant. The total project investment is $26 million. Virginia successfully competed against Florida for the project.

“It is significant that NYK Logistics is opening its second Virginia facility in 18 months,” Governor Kaine said. “The great workforce in the Hampton Roads region, and access to the Port of Virginia, contributed to the company’s decision to open this facility in Chesapeake.”

NYK Logistics provides supply chain services for the retail industry, including warehousing and distribution, freight forwarding, and supply chain consulting. NYK Logistics is a part of NYK Group, which was founded in 1885. Since its founding, NYK has grown to become one of the world’s leading shipping companies. The NYK group has more than 30,000 employees around the world and offers various transportation services.

"Southeast Virginia is seen as a strategic location for NYK Logistics' major East Coast presence,” said Lane Turner, President, Warehouse Division, NYK Logistics Inc. “Centrally located with excellent port facilities and infrastructure, our expansion here further enables us to provide a full complement of logistics services for our clients. That, combined with a talented workforce and a business-friendly community, made this an easy choice."

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the City of Chesapeake to secure the project for Virginia. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance through its Workforce Services Jobs Investment Program.

“NYK Logistics Inc. has an established global reputation for providing customers with value-creating logistics solutions," said Chesapeake Mayor Dalton S. Edge. "The Port of Virginia is vital to the continued economic success of Hampton Roads, and the decision of NYK to locate its newest facility in Chesapeake reinforces this region's position as the premier logistics center on the East Coast."
