RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine will discuss the importance of international trade to Virginia and seek ideas for the Commonwealth’s first international strategic plan October 4th during the 58th Virginia Conference on World Trade. The conference, sponsored by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, will be held October 3-4 at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in Roanoke.

“U.S. exports and imports have increased by $321 billion and $930 billion respectively,” said Governor Kaine. “International trade plays a fundamental role in Virginia’s economy. For the Commonwealth to build on its competitive edge in the global marketplace, we must produce a cohesive strategy agreed upon by Virginia’s international experts and business leaders. I look forward to a healthy exchange of ideas at this conference.”

Nearly 300 conference participants have registered to attend. Presenters will include representatives from the United Nations, Norfolk Southern, MeadWestvaco, Maersk and Northrop Grumman.

“Collaboration with individuals from all areas of international expertise to create Virginia’s first international strategy is an important milestone,” said Paul Grossman, VEDP International Trade and Investment Director. “As we prepare to celebrate Virginia’s 400th anniversary in 2007, it is vital to know Virginia’s place in global commerce in the decade ahead.”
