RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced AVID Medical Inc. will invest $7.9 million to expand its facility in James City County, creating 303 new jobs. The company manufactures custom procedure-ready trays for the healthcare industry and will expand by doubling its existing 90,000-square-foot facility in the Stonehouse Commerce Park. Virginia successfully competed against California for the project.

“AVID Medical has found tremendous success in James City County and made a name for itself in Virginia, and this expansion will add a significant number of jobs and revenue to the region,” said Governor Kaine. “I thank AVID Medical for its recognition of Virginia’s outstanding workforce and for its continued commitment to the Commonwealth.”

Founded in 1998, AVID Medical Inc. sells custom procedural trays for surgical, Cardio catheterization and labor-and-delivery procedures to approximately 800 hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, government medical facilities, and organ and tissue procurement agencies. Drawing on more than 100 years of combined management experience in custom medical packaging, AVID Medical has re-introduced quality back into the custom procedural tray industry.

According to Michael Sahady, Chairman, CEO and founder of AVID Medical, “The company has experienced phenomenal growth in both its customer base and order volumes during the past year, driving our need for more production capability. We expect to do $100 million in sales this coming year.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the James City County Economic Development Authority and the James City Service Authority to secure the project for Virginia. Governor Kaine approved a $700,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist James City County with the project. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will support the project with training assistance through its Workforce Services Jobs Investment Program.

“We are extremely proud of AVID Medical’s continuing business success here in James City County,” said County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bruce Goodson. “This is the third year in a row that AVID has been recognized by the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce as one of the fastest growing manufacturers in the Commonwealth.”
