RICHMOND - Governor Mark R. Warner today announced that Service Center Metals (SCM) will invest $28 million to expand and upgrade its facility in Prince George County. The project will create 32 new production jobs. Virginia successfully competed with California and Tennessee for the project.
"Service Center Metals is a real Virginia success story," said Governor Warner. "With the aid of financing provided by the Department of Business Assistance for the initial start-up, this company was able to get off the ground. SCM's transition from start-up to profitability in just seven months is testament to the power of public/private cooperation in the Commonwealth."
Founded in 2002, Service Center Metals, an aluminum extrusion plant, produces aluminum rods, bars, shapes and tubing, all of which are shipped to metal service centers across the United States. Extrusion plants are a vital link in the aluminum industry chain, responsible for making aluminum profiles used in the building and construction, electrical, transportation, consumer durables, and machinery and equipment industries. Service Center Metals will sell its products to service centers nationwide to serve all five markets.
"The Prince George County site was chosen because of the ability to attract experienced aluminum industry talent in the region and Southpoint Business Park's central location as well as the support of the Virginia Department of Business Assistance and the Commonwealth's pro-business climate," said Scott Kelley, President and CEO, Service Center Metals.
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Prince George County and Virginia's Gateway Region to prepare the state's proposal and negotiate an incentive package that secured the project for Virginia. Governor Warner approved a $50,000 grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund to assist Prince George County with the project. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance through its Workforce Services Program as well as financing through the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority.
