RICHMOND - Governor Mark R. Warner today announced that Service Center Metals (SCM) will invest $13 million and create 100 new jobs over the next four years in Prince George County. The company’s new 78,000-square-foot aluminum extrusion facility will be located in the SouthPoint Industrial Park. Virginia successfully competed with North Carolina and Tennessee for the project. Governor Warner welcomed the Service Center Metals at a groundbreaking ceremony this morning in Prince George County.

“We are fortunate this new company has chosen Virginia as its home for a state of the art manufacturing facility,” said Governor Warner. “Service Center Metals is an excellent new employer for Prince George County. I am pleased that the Commonwealth could assist this promising new corporate citizen with its growth.”

Founded by several seasoned aluminum industry executives, Service Center Metals is a supplier of extruded aluminum rod, bar, standard shapes, and tubing to the distribution market segment. The company intends to become the industry’s most efficient, low-cost producer of extrusions within this niche. Service Center Metals’ goal is to combine quality products with exceptional customer service and support, creating an organization that will serve as the showcase for modern manufacturing processes and efficiencies in the industry. Construction on the company’s state-of-the-art facility will begin in October 2002 and is scheduled for completion in July 2003. Hiring for the facility will begin in May 2003.

“The Commonwealth of Virginia has served as a catalyst to launch SCM and will continue to be an invaluable partner in our success,” said Scott Kelley, President of Service Center Metals. “We chose this Prince George County site because of the Hollingsworth Companies’ SouthPoint Industrial Park site and its outstanding access to major interstate highways, as well as the existing base of experienced aluminum industry talent in the region.”
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Virginia’s Gateway Region and Prince George County assisted Service Center Metals with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services as well as financing through the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority.
