RICHMOND - Governor Mark R. Warner today announced that U.S. Foodservice will invest $22 million and create 200 jobs with an expansion of its existing distribution facility in the City of Salem. The company plans to build three new buildings at the site for a total of 400,000 square feet. Virginia successfully competed with Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee for the investment.

“I am pleased that U.S. Foodservice’s positive business experience in Virginia has resulted in this current expansion and 200 new jobs,” said Governor Warner. “This investment demonstrates again that Virginia’s east coast location continues to be a major draw for distribution centers representing a variety of industries.”

Headquartered in Columbia, Maryland, U.S. Foodservice is one of the leading broadline food service distributors in the United States, with annual revenues exceeding $18 billion. With over 85 distribution centers nationwide, the company markets and distributes more than 43,000 national, private label and signature brand items across America. U.S. Foodservice supports over 300,000 food service customers, including restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, cafeterias, and schools.

“U. S. Foodservice continues to experience strong growth in the Virginia market. With the expansion of our Salem facility, we will have the capacity to continue this growth for many years to come,” said Dale Brown, U. S. Foodservice South Central Zone President. “The Salem distribution center is located only a few hours from major markets in North Carolina, West Virginia and Tennessee. The City of Salem and the Commonwealth of Virginia have been very supportive in our expansion efforts and have assisted us in obtaining the necessary approvals for the construction of this facility.”

Governor Warner approved a $300,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist the City of Salem with the project. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the City of Salem assisted U.S. Foodservice with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services.
