Governor Gilmore announces firm's intent to add 50 employees; retain 200

Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced Fisher Scientific Company LLC intends to expand production and employment at its recently purchased diagnostics manufacturing plant in Frederick County, thus creating as many as 50 new jobs while retaining the 200 employees currently working there. Virginia competed successfully with Connecticut and New Jersey for the Fisher investment. Fisher Global Laboratory Products, a unit of Fisher Scientific International, Inc. (NYSE: FSH), purchased the facility in January.

"Fisher Scientific is a world leader in serving science, and the pharmaceutical industry is the company's largest customer," said Governor Gilmore. "As Fisher continues to expand through e-commerce and global logistics, Virginia's pro-business climate and supportive technology environment will only add to the company's success."

"This announcement proves that Virginia is gaining momentum in the pharmaceutical industry and its supplier community," said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Barry E. DuVal. "Fisher Scientific will strengthen the local economy and allow 200 Virginians to keep their jobs."

Governor Gilmore approved a grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund in the amount of $250,000 to assist Frederick County with site acquisition. The company will receive a $350,000 grant from the Virginia Investment Partnership program. The Virginia Investment Partnership program requires a minimum investment of $25 million. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Winchester-Frederick County Economic Development Commission and Frederick County assisted the company with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services.
