Company adds 200 new jobs, $9 million investment

Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Nextel Communications will locate a new activations and fulfillment center in the City of Hampton. The Virginia-based company intends to open this $9 million facility in April with an anticipated workforce of 200 employees by year-end. This is the second customer service center the company has constructed in Hampton over the past year. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in January to celebrate the opening of Nextel's customer care center.

"Nextel's decision to reinvest again in Hampton is evidence that the Commonwealth is an ideal location for telecommunications companies," Governor Gilmore said. "I'm committed to keeping Virginia a global technology leader. Nextel's wireless products and services cement that role further."

Nextel is headquartered in Reston and currently has a nationwide employee base of approximately 13,000. Nextel is the nation's largest provider of fully integrated all-digital wireless services and provides wireless communications services in 94 of the top 100 U.S. markets. Nextel's new activations and fulfillment center is responsible for large corporate accounts' activation and fulfillment needs.

"This new Nextel facility is a natural expansion given our continued growth," said Scott Hoganson, area president for Nextel MidSouth. "We have been extremely pleased with the operations at our customer care facility and the tremendous support from the Hampton community. We plan to be an anchor on the Virginia Peninsula for the long-term."

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the City of Hampton and the Peninsula Alliance for Economic Development assisted the company with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services.
