Governor Gilmore Announces Perdue Farms' $25 Million Investment in Prince George County

Company's investment in distribution center largest in county's history

Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Perdue Farms, Inc. will locate a $25 million packaging, quality control, labeling and distribution center in Prince George County. The facility will be operated by the Pro Source Group, a manufacturing and logistics company based in Chicago. Pro Source plans to hire 175 employees at the Perdue plant, making the center one of the five largest employers in the area. 

"I am delighted that Perdue has chosen Prince George County for this important distribution facility," Governor Gilmore said. "This new facility will benefit the regional economy by providing quality jobs for Virginians and supporting the state's profitable poultry industry." 

Perdue's distribution operation will be housed in a 120,000-square-foot building in the SouthPoint Business Park. The initiative is a key strategy in further strengthening the company's supply chain infrastructure and customer service capabilities. Perdue Farms is the largest poultry producer in the Northeast and the third largest in the United States, employing more than 20,000 associates worldwide.

"Locating this facility in Virginia will help Perdue better serve our Mid-Atlantic customers within a 300 mile radius - roughly from Charlotte to Philadelphia," Director of Projects for Perdue Neal Walsh said. "This operation will allow us to increase our service offerings to our valued customers." Pro Source officials have indicated that wages will be competitive for the region with full-time employees eligible for a full-range of benefits. 

"Virginia has once again recruited a respected company that plans to access the state's excellent transportation system for its distribution functions," Secretary of Commerce and Trade Barry E. DuVal added. "This project was a true team effort between the locality, the region and the state." 

Governor Gilmore approved a grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund in the amount of $300,000 to assist Prince George County with site preparation. In making the selection, Perdue and Pro Source officials worked closely with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Appomattox Basin Industrial Development Corporation and Prince George County. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services to the company.
