Star Tobacco & Pharmaceuticals will create 65 jobs in Chase City

Richmond - Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore today announced the decision by Star Tobacco & Pharmaceuticals to locate a manufacturing facility in the Town of Chase City. The company is a tobacco manufacturer and the exclusive licensee to a technology to eliminate nitrosamines. Star Tobacco & Pharmaceuticals will hire 65 employees with a capital investment of $3 million.

"I am pleased to welcome Virginia's newest corporate citizen," said Governor Gilmore. "The citizens of Mecklenburg County and Chase City will greatly benefit from this technology-focused company. Star Tobacco & Pharmaceuticals will complement Virginia's agricultural business as well as the state's emerging pharmaceutical industry."

Star Tobacco & Pharmaceuticals manufactures conventional cigarettes sold throughout the United States. The Chase City plant will process tobacco as well as manufacture the equipment used for tobacco processing. The company will occupy the Chase City shell building located in an Enterprise Zone.

"The cooperation we received from the state, county and city was simply outstanding," said Samuel P. Sears, Chairman and CEO of Star Tobacco and Pharmaceuticals. "Our new facility will manufacture a large quantity of product which will add to Virginia's economic growth."

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Mecklenburg County and the Town of Chase City assisted the company with its decision.

"We are ecstatic that Star Tobacco & Pharmaceuticals has chosen Chase City for its new manufacturing operation," said Bill Keel, Mayor of Chase City. "This respected Virginia company will be an asset to the region's tobacco growers."
