RICHMOND - Governor Mark R. Warner today announced that Hopkins Lumber Company will invest $1.6 million and add 50 new jobs at its lumber and wood products manufacturing facility in Patrick County. Virginia successfully competed with Kentucky and Tennessee for the project.
“Hopkins Lumber’s decision to expand in its home state brings promising opportunities for Patrick County,” said Governor Warner. “This is a good example of how a local family-owned business has found a way to diversify and survive.”
Hopkins Lumber Company, headquartered in Patrick County, specializes in manufacturing dimension lumber and fabricating boxes for packaging glass products.
John Hopkins, Sr., President of Hopkins Lumber said, “Hopkins Lumber Contractors, Inc. strives to work toward the continued growth of our company for our current employees and their families, as well as looking to the future. We are committed to the continuation of growth in this community and believe that it is vital. We are pleased that the County of Patrick and the Commonwealth of Virginia have agreed to provide assistance in making this growth possible.”
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and Patrick County worked with Hopkins Lumber to secure the project for Virginia. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will support the project with its Workforce Services Program. The Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission was instrumental in closing the deal by approving a $50,000 grant through the Tobacco Region Opportunity Fund.
“We are proud to help Hopkins Lumber expand in our community. The new jobs and tax base created by this project will have a significant positive impact on Patrick County’s efforts to revitalize itself,” said Michael Burnette, Patrick County Assistant Administrator.
