RICHMOND - Governor Mark R. Warner today announced that Joy Mining Machinery will expand its manufacturing operations in Scott County, creating 45 new jobs. Through a $1.4-million investment, the company will build a 10,350-square-foot facility adjacent to its current manufacturing space in the Duffield Regional Industrial Park. Virginia successfully competed with Pennsylvania and Illinois for the project.
“Virginia’s pro-business environment is vital to retaining our existing companies and encouraging their expansion and re-investment,” said Governor Warner. “I’m pleased that the Commonwealth was able to assist Joy Mining Machinery, creating new opportunities in a region where we’re working hard to keep and create jobs.”
Joy Mining Machinery has more than 75 years of experience as a global leader in the development, manufacture, distribution and service of underground mining machinery for the extraction of coal and other bedded materials. Manufacturing centers are located in the United States, United Kingdom and South Africa. The Joy Mining Machinery business is headquartered in Warrendale, Pennsylvania and has more than 40 field offices in eight countries. Joy Mining Machinery currently employs 155 people in Scott County.
“Our Scott County location has been a great investment for Joy,” said Mike Lane, Joy Mining Machinery’s Duffield site manager. “We are excited to announce our expansion plans and provide additional jobs for the exceptional workforce in the area; our employees make the difference, and their hard work and dedication makes this expansion possible.”
The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $125,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds to assist Scott County with the project. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority and Scott County also assisted Joy Mining Machinery with its expansion decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will support the project with its Workforce Services Program.
