RICHMOND - Governor Mark R. Warner today announced that RR Donnelley will expand its Lynchburg manufacturing facility. As part of the company’s strategy to create the most effective, integrated and flexible printing platform for its customers, RR Donnelley plans to invest $5 million in binding equipment and machinery. The investment is part of the company’s 2003 capital spending plan of approximately $250 million, aimed at strengthening the company’s print capabilities. With the addition of the new equipment, RR Donnelley estimates that it will add approximately 50 new jobs. Virginia successfully competed with other states for the investment.

“RR Donnelley is one of Lynchburg’s largest employers,” said Governor Warner. “Today’s announcement is another testament to Virginia's pro-business climate, which continues to appeal to locally established industries as well as those considering the Commonwealth as a future home.”

“Our investments in new technology at our Lynchburg facility significantly enhances our distributed print platform and strengthens the value we bring to customers,” said Bob Leveque, Vice President of Manufacturing for RR Donnelley’s Lynchburg facility. “Our continued investment in people, process and technology demonstrates our relentless pursuit to become world-class manufacturers.”

Governor Warner approved a $50,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist the City of Lynchburg with its support. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Region 2000 Economic Development Partnership, the City of Lynchburg Office of Economic Development and the Lynchburg Industrial Development Authority assisted with the project. To support the company’s investment, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training as well as retraining assistance for existing RR Donnelley jobs.

“We are always pleased when a company like RR Donnelley chooses to expand its operations,” said Lynchburg Mayor Carl B. Hutcherson, Jr. “This reinvestment further validates the city’s business-friendly environment. The expansion means new jobs for this community and we thank Governor Warner for approving the grant that will assist RR Donnelley in its expansion efforts.”

RR Donnelley’s Lynchburg facility produces over 700 million catalogs and retail inserts annually. RR Donnelley acquired the Lynchburg facility in 1990 and the facility currently employs 600 people.
