RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that Tosoh America, Inc. will invest $4 million and create 27 jobs at a new facility in the City of Manassas. The investment relates to Tosoh’s Electronic Materials Division, a provider of high purity materials and services to the semiconductor industry. Virginia successfully competed with New York and Ohio for the project.

“Virginia’s successful effort to attract and support the semiconductor sector has resulted in the industry cluster that Tosoh now joins as a supplier,” said Governor Kaine. “With other semiconductor related U.S. facilities in California, Ohio and Oregon, the company’s Virginia operation will allow market access to semiconductor clusters on both coasts.”

Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Tosoh’s Electronic Materials Division is part of the Tosoh Group. The Tosoh Group manufactures and provides industrial and specialty chemicals. Founded in 1935, the Company has expanded its reach into high value-added businesses such as fine chemicals, scientific instrumentation, thin film materials, and quartzware. Tosoh employs more than 9,000 people worldwide, and the company is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchanges.

"Our new Manassas cleaning and kitting facility is the next logical step in Tosoh's strategy to expand its world-class products and services within the global semiconductor industry,” said Mr. Yojiro Takahashi, President, Tosoh America. “This state-of-the-art operation will compliment our cleaning and kitting sites in California and Japan, and will provide local support for all Tosoh Electronic Materials products. Proximity to major customers, support provided by the state and city, an experienced workforce and fast-track streamlined permitting made Manassas an easy choice for this expansion of our business."

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the City of Manassas to secure the project for Virginia. Governor Kaine approved a $67,500 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Manassas with the project. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will also support the project with training assistance through its Workforce Services Jobs Investment Program.

“We are very pleased that Tosoh decided to locate their East Coast operations center in the City of Manassas,” stated Mayor Douglas Waldron. “The quality of this project is a clear indicator that prominent companies are being drawn to Manassas and understand the importance of having an aggressive business partner like Manassas. Tosoh is a well-known international company, and we look forward to having them join our business community.”

“We are pleased to join Governor Kaine in announcing the arrival of the new Tosoh East Coast facility to the City of Manassas,” commented Lawrence D. Hughes, Manassas City Manager. “The collaboration between the state and the City has resulted in not only new jobs, but the presence of a new corporate partner. We appreciate Tosoh’s investment in our community and look forward to working with the company as it continues to expand its presence in the East Coast market”.
